Hilary Howes

Hilary Howes, author of To Be or Not to Be: A Catholic Transexual Speaks , is a founder of TransCatholic an apostolate supporting the dignity and inclusion of transgender laity. Her Roman Catholic marriage, as a man, in 1978 survived her transition to her authentic gender in 1995 and in 2003 she was baptized into the faith of her wife. Since then her call has led her to serve on the Dignity Transgender Caucus, Transfaith/IWG Communications Committee, Gender Rights Maryland Board, and the Pacific School of Religion’s Trans-Roundtable.

Speaking on Gender Authenticity since 1993 she moved from educator, to advocate, to activist, arriving at evangelist, in presenting to college psychology and sex education classes, to business leaders, to congress people, to support groups, to religious communities.

Her blog at TransCatholic (Togetherstyle before 2017) has, since 2010, been a light to those who seek to maintain their Catholic faith through their spiritual gender journey. She continues her on line ministry through admin duties on Facebook pages: Association of Transgender Professionals, TransCatholic, and Trans*Marriage – a group for relationships that choose fidelity over sexual orientation when faced with gender transition.

The Fordham University Press published her essay Mother, Father, Brother, Sister, Husband, & Wife in More than a Monologue Sexual Diversity and the Catholic Church:
Volume I: Voices of Our Times
